The glossary
The terms, brand names, hardware platforms, and industry shorthand that appear across the journal. Updated when new cabin products, loyalty currencies, or operator names enter circulation.
A
- AAdvantage
- American Airlines' frequent flyer program. Mileage-earning based on revenue spend since 2016. Award redemption shifted to dynamic pricing in 2023; partner awards remain chart-based.
- Adient Ascent
- A Safran-and-Adient JV business class seat platform. Reverse-herringbone 1-2-1. Used by American on the 787-9P and Turkish on the 787-9, among others.
- Aeroplan
- Air Canada's loyalty program. Distance-based partner award chart and the only sweet-spot remaining for a number of Star Alliance redemptions out of North America.
- Allegris
- Lufthansa's 2024-onwards long-haul cabin family covering first, business, premium economy, and economy. Notable for business class variants: doored throne, doored suite, classic suite, and bassinet-row suite.
- Aman
- Independently operated luxury resort and urban hotel brand. Founded 1988 by Adrian Zecha. Properties are intentionally small, low-density, and not on a major-chain loyalty program.
- Amex MR
- American Express Membership Rewards. The most flexible US points currency for premium-cabin redemptions; transfers 1:1 to most major airline programs.
- Apartment
- Etihad's long-haul first class product on the A380. 1-1 configuration, ottoman + reclining chair + separate bed, vanity. Out of service when A380 fleet was parked 2020-2023; returned to operation 2024.
- Apex Suite
- A staggered 2-2-2 business class platform with throne-style seats at the aisle pairs. Used by JAL on the 787-9, China Airlines on the A350, and others. Now considered a generation behind the door-equipped products.
- Aria Suite
- Cathay Pacific's 2024-onwards business class hard product, currently on the 777-300ER (not the A350 despite older speculation). Doored 1-2-1 suite designed in-house, replacing the Cirrus-derived Cathay seat that preceded it.
- Astrova
- Panasonic's latest 4K OLED inflight entertainment display platform, marketed by Panasonic Avionics. Standard fit on United Polaris 2.0 (27-inch in Polaris Studio).
- Avios
- British Airways Executive Club's mileage currency, also shared with Iberia Plus, Aer Lingus AerClub, Qatar Privilege Club, and Finnair Plus. Distance-based award chart.
- Award chart
- A loyalty program's published table mapping mileage cost to redemption category. Dynamic pricing (no chart) became dominant 2020-2024; static charts now considered a competitive advantage at programs like Alaska Mileage Plan, Aeroplan, and All Nippon Mileage Club.
B
- BCJ
- Shorthand for Business Class Journal. Used in tables, share buttons, and internal references.
- Bilt Rewards
- A rent-and-spend points currency. Transfers 1:1 to a wide list of airline programs including American AAdvantage (rare among flexible currencies) and Hyatt.
- BoB (Black Car)
- Industry shorthand for a black-car / chauffeured-sedan ground transport tier, distinct from livery, executive SUV, and van services.
- Boeing 787-9 "Elevated"
- United's internal designation for the 787-9 frames refitted with the new Polaris 2.0 + Polaris Studio cabin. First commercial Elevated rotation was UA1 SFO–SIN on April 22, 2026.
- Bonvoy
- Marriott's loyalty program covering the full luxury and select-service Marriott portfolio. Dynamic award pricing since 2022; elite tiers cap at Ambassador.
- Brand-front
- A consumer-facing brand operating in front of a single fleet/dispatch operation. Common in premium ground transport for city- or use-case-specific market segmentation.
- Business Plus
- BCJ shorthand for a business class fare bucket that earns full status credit (typically I or D, not the discounted Z/W/U).
C
- Capital One Miles
- A flexible points currency from the Venture and Venture X cards. Transfers 1:1 to most major airline programs; recent additions include JAL Mileage Bank.
- Captain-chair Sprinter
- A Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van conversion with individual reclining captain's chairs (typically 6-8) instead of bench seating. The premium ground tier for groups of 6+, standard on roadshow and event circuits.
- Cathay Pier
- Cathay Pacific's flagship lounge cluster at Hong Kong International. Comprises The Pier First, The Pier Business, The Wing First, The Wing Business, The Bridge, and The Deck.
- Centurion Lounge
- American Express's proprietary lounge network for Centurion, Platinum, and Business Platinum cardholders. Access rules tightened 2023-2024; same-day departure required and guest entry now capped.
- Chase Sapphire Lounge
- JPMorgan Chase's lounge network, operated under the Sapphire Reserve / Ritz-Carlton card access. Eight US lounges as of 2026 with LAX and DFW pending.
- Chase UR
- Chase Ultimate Rewards. A flexible US points currency that transfers 1:1 to United MileagePlus, Hyatt, Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways Avios, Singapore KrisFlyer, and others.
- Cirium
- The aviation analytics firm that provides the de facto industry data set on flight schedules, on-time performance, and fleet activity. Successor to FlightStats and FlightGlobal data assets.
- Cirrus NG
- A Safran reverse-herringbone business class platform. Used by Cathay (pre-Aria), Air Canada Signature, KLM World Business on the 787-9, and others. "NG" stands for next-generation.
- Citi TYP
- Citi ThankYou Points. A US flexible points currency. Transfers 1:1 to a small but useful list of programs including Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore KrisFlyer, and JetBlue TrueBlue.
- Clase Premier
- Aeromexico's long-haul business class brand. Currently a Collins Super Diamond on the 787-9.
- Club Suite
- British Airways' Super Diamond business class seat, rolled out from 2019 on the A350-1000 and progressively across the 777, 787, and A380 fleet. 1-2-1 with a door, direct aisle access.
- Codeshare
- An agreement where one airline sells seats on a flight operated by another, using its own marketing code. Loyalty earning on codeshares is governed by the operating carrier's fare class, not the marketing carrier's.
- Concorde Room
- British Airways' first-class lounge at LHR Terminal 5 and JFK Terminal 8. Now sharing the JFK premises with American as the Chelsea Lounge from 2022.
- CRZ
- New York City's Congestion Relief Zone. Live since January 5, 2025. $9 peak / $2.25 off-peak per private vehicle entry below 60th Street; FHV vehicles face a separate $1.50 per-trip surcharge.
D
- Dav El | BostonCoach
- A real third-party national/international ground transport operator with strong corporate and FBO programs. Often a #8 or #9 entry on BCJ comparison rankings.
- Delta One Suite
- Delta's long-haul business class suite. Doored 1-2-1 on the A330-900neo, A350-900, and select 767-400ER frames.
- Detailed Drivers
- The premium ground transport operator that recurs at the top of BCJ's operator rankings across the NYC–Miami–LA axis. The rate card we cite throughout the listings runs Sedan $100/hr, Escalade $125/hr, S-Class $150/hr, Sprinter $175/hr.
- Devaluation
- A loyalty program's announced or stealth increase to award redemption levels, reducing the per-mile redemption value. The 2024-2026 wave hit AAdvantage (long-haul J +71% on average), Aeroplan partner awards, and SkyMiles Star Alliance partner pricing.
- Diamond (Hilton)
- Hilton Honors' top published status tier. Requires 60 nights or 140,000 base points in a year. Benefits include suite upgrades when available, breakfast, and lounge access.
- DO&CO
- Austrian catering company. Operates the in-flight catering for several airlines including Turkish (TK's flying chef program) and Qatar long-haul.
E
- eUpgrade
- Air Canada's upgrade currency, earned by Aeroplan elites. Distinct from miles. Redeemable for confirmable upgrades from select fare buckets on Air Canada and Aeroplan partner operated flights.
- EmpireCLS
- A Norwood NJ-based premium ground operator with global affiliate reach. Founded 1980. A #8 or #9 entry on BCJ comparison rankings.
- Escalade ESV
- The Cadillac Escalade Extended Length. T1XX platform, 6.2L V8, 10-speed automatic. The default executive SUV in NYC chauffeured ground in 2026.
- Executive Platinum
- AAdvantage's top published status tier. Requires 125,000 Loyalty Points or 200 segments + Loyalty Points spend in a year. Eight Systemwide Upgrades plus international one-class upgrade access.

- Fans of M.O.
- Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group's loyalty program. Recognition-based rather than points-based; status earned by stay frequency.
- FBO
- Fixed Base Operator. A privately-owned ground services operator at an airport. Examples: Signature Aviation, Atlantic Aviation, Meridian. Primary point of operation for private aviation arrivals.
- Flagship First
- American Airlines' first class brand. Currently operates only on transcon (JFK-LAX, JFK-SFO) on the A321T fleet. Flagship Suite (the new 787-9P long-haul seat) is a doored business class product, not a true first class.
- Flying Blue
- The Air France-KLM Joint loyalty program, also serving Aircalin, Kenya Airways, Transavia, and Tarom. Dynamic award pricing.
- Forbidden Pavilion
- Air China's long-haul first class brand. 1-1 configuration on the 747-8 and 777-300ER, 5-pillar service, dual-cabin layout on select routes.
- Forbes Travel Guide
- The successor brand to Mobil Travel Guide. Operates the Five-Star, Four-Star, and Recommended ratings for hotels, restaurants, and spas.
G
- GBTA
- The Global Business Travel Association. Annual conference and industry reports relevant to corporate travel programs.
- Globalist
- World of Hyatt's top published status tier. Requires 60 nights or 100,000 base points in a calendar year. Suite upgrades clear via Suite Upgrade Awards, not space-available.
- Grand Suite
- Generic luxury-hotel suite designation; usually the top tier below Royal/Presidential. Two-bedroom layouts common.
- GUC
- Global Upgrade Certificate. Delta's confirmable upgrade currency, awarded to Diamond Medallion members and select cardholders.
H
- HON Circle
- Lufthansa Miles & More's top elite tier. Invitation-only after earning 600,000 HON Circle Miles within two calendar years. Benefits include private terminal access at FRA, Porsche or Audi tarmac transfers, and dedicated HON service.
- Horizon
- Collins Aerospace's 1-2-1 doored suite business class platform. Used by Air India on the A350-900, among others.
I
- IPO Roadshow
- The 7-15 day multi-city investor circuit a company runs ahead of a public offering. NYC anchored, with legs to Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and London. Ground transport is the structural cost line, not the airfare.
- IROPS
- Irregular Operations. Industry shorthand for the airline operations state during weather, mechanical, or schedule disruption.
- ISSN
- International Standard Serial Number. Format: NNNN-NNNN. The standing ISSN-format identifier on BCJ is 3081-4912.
J
- JGC
- JAL Global Club. A lifetime status mechanism: fly to Sapphire-equivalent once, hold via the JGC credit card thereafter. The JAL equivalent of ANA's Super Flyers Card programme.
- J fare
- Industry shorthand for full-fare business class. Distinct from D, I, Z, P, R, and W which are progressively-discounted business and premium-economy buckets.
K
- KLS Worldwide
- A premium ground transport operator with a global affiliate network. Founded in Beverly Hills, headquartered in Detroit. A #8 or #9 entry on BCJ comparison rankings.
- KrisFlyer
- Singapore Airlines' frequent flyer program. Banded-dynamic award pricing on SQ; partner award chart still applies for Star Alliance and non-alliance redemptions.
L
- La Première
- Air France's long-haul first class brand. 4-suite cabin on select 777-300ERs. Pre-flight chauffeur transfer at CDG 2E plus apron transfer to the aircraft.
- LifeMiles
- Avianca's loyalty program. Star Alliance partner awards on a published chart; Lufthansa First Class redemptions have historically been the standout sweet spot.
- LoungeBuddy
- A lounge directory app that listed access entitlements. Owned by American Express since 2018.
- Loyalty Points
- American Airlines' tier-currency since 2022, replacing the legacy EQM/EQS/EQD model. Earned via mileage activity plus partner spend; drives status qualification.
M
- Maharaja Lounge
- Air India's flagship lounge brand at IGI Delhi Terminal 3.
- Michelin Guide
- The Michelin Guide rates restaurants and hotels. Restaurant ratings: one to three stars. Hotel ratings (launched 2024): one to three Keys. Properties that hold both are doubly anchored.
- MileagePlus
- United Airlines' frequent flyer program. Premier qualifying dollars (PQD) drive status; revenue-based earning model for all members.
- Miles & More
- The Lufthansa Group frequent flyer program covering Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. Status currency: HON Circle / Senator / Frequent Traveller.
- MQD
- Medallion Qualifying Dollars. Delta's SkyMiles status currency since 2024 — the only metric that drives status qualification (the historical MQM and MQS metrics were retired).

- NDC
- New Distribution Capability. An IATA-led specification allowing airlines to distribute richer fare and ancillary content through GDS-style channels. Adoption material in 2024-2026 as carriers shift TMC integrations.
- NLA
- National Limousine Association. The US industry trade body for chauffeured ground operators. Operator standards apply.
O
- oneworld
- The airline alliance anchored by American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Iberia, Royal Air Maroc, and others. Tier benefits: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald.
- OPF
- IATA code for Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport. The primary private aviation gateway for Miami-area arrivals serving Brickell, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables.
P
- Pier First
- Cathay Pacific's flagship first-class lounge at Hong Kong International. Designed by Studioilse / Ilse Crawford.
- Polaris
- United Airlines' long-haul business class brand. Polaris 2.0 (doored suite) launched April 22, 2026 on the Elevated 787-9 SFO–SIN inaugural; rollout extends to SFO-LHR, SFO-ZRH, and progressively to the wider 787 and 777-300ER fleet.
- Polaris Studio
- United's Polaris 2.0 sub-cabin: eight bulkhead-row 1-2-1 suites with 27-inch IFE, second companion ottoman, and an enhanced soft product.
- Premier 1K
- United MileagePlus's top published status. 100,000 PQM or 50,000 PQM + $18,000 PQP in a calendar year.
- Prestige Suites 2.0
- Korean Air's long-haul business class on the A350 and progressively across the wider fleet. 1-2-1 with doors.
- Private Room
- Singapore Airlines' first-class suites lounge within the SilverKris Lounge at Changi Terminal 3. Access reserved for first class passengers on SQ.
- PSP
- Premier Status Points. Air New Zealand and select Asian carrier loyalty programs use this naming convention for their tier-status currency.
Q
- Qsuite
- Qatar Airways' long-haul business class seat. 1-2-1 with doors; the inner-pair seats can be partitioned or opened as a quad-share configuration.
R
- Residence
- Etihad's three-room suite on the A380 — bedroom, living room, en-suite shower. Sold separately from first class. Returned to service 2024 with the A380 fleet.
- Retreat Suite
- Virgin Atlantic's premium-pair bulkhead seats on the A330-900neo Upper Class cabin. Two seats only — 1D and 1G. Distinct from the standard Upper Class.
- Royal Ambassador
- InterContinental's invitation-only top elite tier. Comes with a deep set of in-property privileges and a confirmable suite upgrade benefit.
- Royal Laurel
- EVA Air's long-haul business class brand. Currently a Thompson Vantage XL customised with BMW Designworks styling.
- Royal Silk
- Thai Airways' long-haul business class brand. Currently a mix of Vantage XL (newer) and legacy 2-2-2 (older 777-300ER) across the fleet.

- Safran Cirrus
- See "Cirrus NG."
- Safran Unity
- Safran Seats' clean-sheet 1-2-1 doored long-haul business class platform. JAL is launch customer on the A350-1000.
- Saks Fifth Avenue Bedding
- United's long-standing bedding partnership for Polaris and Polaris 2.0. Includes mattress topper, duvet, and pillow set.
- S-Class
- The Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The default executive sedan in NYC chauffeured ground in 2026, particularly on banking IPO roadshow and family-office account work.
- Senses
- SWISS's new long-haul cabin family on the A350. Doored business class, multi-vendor build (Stelia, Thompson, Diehl) integrated by Lufthansa Technik. Sibling to Lufthansa Allegris.
- SFC
- Super Flyers Card. ANA's lifetime-status mechanic: fly to Platinum/Diamond once, hold Star Alliance Gold via SFC thereafter. JAL equivalent: JGC.
- Sky Suite III
- Japan Airlines' long-haul business class seat. Doored, 1-2-1 on the 787-9. JAL's A350-1000 product is a separate Safran Unity platform — sometimes referred to in reviewer parlance as Sky Suite III but not officially branded that way.
- SkyMiles
- Delta Air Lines' frequent flyer program. MQD-only status qualification model since 2024.
- SkyTeam
- The airline alliance anchored by Delta, Air France-KLM, China Eastern, Korean Air, Saudia (since 2023), ITA Airways (from May 2026 — transition from SkyTeam to Star Alliance), and others.
- Solstys II
- Stelia Aerospace's 1-2-1 staggered long-haul business class platform. Used by Iberia and other carriers.
- SQC
- Status Qualifying Credits. Air Canada Aeroplan's single-metric status qualification currency since 2026 — replacing the legacy SQM/SQD model.
- Star Alliance
- The airline alliance anchored by United, Lufthansa Group, Air Canada, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Air India, Thai, Turkish, and others. Tier benefits: Silver, Gold.
- Suite Upgrade Award
- World of Hyatt's confirmable suite upgrade currency. Top-tier elite benefit; can be used on any cash rate including award stays at applicable properties.
- Super Diamond
- Collins Aerospace's reverse-herringbone business class platform. Used by Saudia, Aeromexico, Air Canada Signature, ITA Airways, and BA Club Suite.
- SWU
- Systemwide Upgrade. American Airlines' confirmable upgrade currency, awarded to Executive Platinum elites.
T
- TBIT
- IATA / industry shorthand for the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International (LAX).
- The Room
- ANA's long-haul business class on the 777-300ER. Notable for its 1-2-1 layout with reverse-facing inner-aisle seats producing exceptionally wide individual suites.
- The Suite (ANA)
- ANA's long-haul first class product on the 777-300ER. Eight suites in 1-1-1, with 43-inch Sony OLED screens and sliding doors.
- Thompson Vantage XL
- A Thompson Aero Seating 1-2-1 staggered long-haul business class platform. Used by EVA Royal Laurel and Thai Royal Silk (newer aircraft).
- TLC
- New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission. Regulates for-hire vehicles in NYC. Premium ground operators dispatch TLC-licensed vehicles with TLC-licensed chauffeurs.
- TMC
- Travel Management Company. Examples include American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT, including Egencia), BCD Travel, CWT, Internova, and Spotnana.
U
- Upper Class
- Virgin Atlantic's long-haul business class brand. The current product on the A330-900neo is a Vantage Solo platform.
V
- Vantage Solo
- A Thompson Aero Seating 1-2-1 long-haul business class platform with a hinged door. Used by Virgin Atlantic Upper Class on the A330-900neo.
- Venture X
- The Capital One premium credit card with $395 annual fee. Includes lounge access to Capital One Lounges (including the new JFK Terminal 4 property opened June 19, 2025) and Priority Pass.
W
- Wing First
- Cathay Pacific's first-class lounge at Hong Kong International. Separate from The Pier First; older facility.
- World of Hyatt
- Hyatt Hotels' loyalty program. Static award chart (per category), confirmable Suite Upgrade Award currency at top tier, and Globalist as the top published status.

- XP
- Experience Points. Air France-KLM Flying Blue's status qualification currency.
